The structure and function of the digestive tract of all animals can tell us a lot about their diet, and the same is true for humans. The most significant portion (%45) of the total gut volume of our primate relatives is the large intestine, which is suitable for breaking down fibre, seeds, and other hard-to-digest plant foods. In humans, the most significant portion of our gut volume (%56) is the small intestine, which suggests we’re adapted to eating more bioavailable and energy-dense foods, like meat and cooked starches, that are easier to digest.
Some proponents of plant-based diets have argued that humans are herbivores because of our small mouth opening, flat incisors and molars, and relatively blunt canines, all of which are characteristics of herbivorous animals. But this argument ignores the fact that we have developed complex methods of obtaining and processing food, from hunting to cooking to using sharp tools to tear and rip meat.
